Harare Photos Today - Part 1 Avondale Flea Market

I quite liked the look of the multi-coloured canopy used to cover the huge car park at Avondale which is now used as the Flea Market



This lady was busy packing goldfish at the Avondale Flea Market for a client when I showed up. The client was not too keen about being photographed, but I found her display of the fish and her tanks for sale delightful


The Market is quite busy at weekends and remains the most well-known and best established Flea Market in Harare. The other markets that had cropped up were disbanded during Operation Murambatsvina, when "illegal businesses" were demolished by Mugabe's government in an effort o arrest the black market in foreign currency and also disperse opposition supporters in the urban areas

Someone in the diaspora asked me on Facebook if I could show him what Harare is like now, so I took these photos at Avondale Flea Market and Shopping Centre at the weekend.

The Flea Market is as vibrant as ever and it continues to be popular.

The Avondale Cinema Complex, popular as ever, especially with posers, continues to be one of the best places in Harare for a Sunday Afternoon coffee or brunch, before one takes in a movie.

I will post the shopping centre photos themselves later on today if nothing happens to our wheezing and sputtering Internet connections!!

Another Tsvangirai Family Accidental Death

Shaun Tsvangirai, grandson to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, drowned in the swimming pool at the PM's home in Strathaven. Shaun was being looked after by the PM and his wife The Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, lost a grandchild on Friday, who drowned in the swimming pool at the PMs residence in Strathaven, a middle-density surburb in Harare. The child who drowned is understood to be Shaun Tsvangirai, son of Garikayi Tsvangirai, himself a son of the Prime Minister. Garikayi had not been living with his parents in Strathaven but had instead left his two children in the care of their grandmother for quite some time now. Zimbabweans , and my readers from all over the world, take a good look at the photo above. This is what a two year old toddler looks like . A boy just like the sweet little kid above is imprisoned right now in one of Zimbabwe's most brutal and notorious prisons. His name is Nigel Mupfuranhehwe. His crime is that his mother is being charged with recruiting "bandits" to topple the government of Robert Mugabe. Zimbabwe lawyers who are representing his mother and the other accused in the case say that this little child has been beaten in front of his mother to get her to confess. Imprisoning a two year old in a maximum security prison together with murderers and rapists and some of the worst kinds of people on earth boggles the mind.
